Controls Commissioning Engineer

The Role:

The Commissioning Engineer is a key member of the TGW Controls Team with involvement in the successful delivery of TGW NE projects.  They are responsible for the commissioning of Level 2 PLC control systems (software commissioning & system testing) for our automated materials handling solutions.  Interacting with Commissioning Team Leads, Commissioning Technicians, Technical Leads, Designers and Clients at our UK Head Office and at various installation sites across the UK and Northern Europe. Being an active participant into the design process when required and ensuring quality feedback into the Control department to ensure continuous improvements are realized

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake the development of project software using the TGW standard tools and architecture.
  • In house software testing through emulation when required.
  • Play an active role in the design of the control systems when required.
  • Undertake full level 2 PLC commissioning, to include but limited to:
    • Sign off of Level 1 Commissioning
    • Implementation of project area software
    • Commissioning to achieve manual control
    • Commissioning to achieve automatic control
    • Commissioning and testing of emergency stop systems
    • Test to mechatronic rates
    • Integration of third party equipment and testing when required.
    • Ensure full integration of system in order to deliver a final working plant is achieved.
  • Take responsibility / ownership for the PLC area being commissioned
  • Actively plan tasks and ensure PLC area being commissioned adheres to project schedule
  • Actively work with the Commissioning Team Leads and Commissioning Technicians, SIM’s and Controls Project Managers in testing system modules  as required.
  • Follow the software revision and back up process as required.
  • Ensure all modifications are fed back to the project team and design department
  • Identify and manage the rectification of any software, hardware & electrical faults
  • Ensure the electrical installation meets the required TGW standards
  • To comply to all current, future health & safety legislation at all times
  • Complete all required commissioning documentation to the required standard
  • Be an ambassador for the delivery of TGW NE controls and actively promote company standards and best practice.
  • Actively developing Commissioning Technicians.
  • Actively manages own development

Key Requirements:

  • Relevant qualification in a mechatronic discipline
  • Able to work within a team environment and co-ordinate when required
  • Proven experience to be able to create project PLC code ideally in the Siemens S7 environment
  • Previous experience of commissioning and testing in an engineering / industrial environment
  • Good understanding of control systems including but not limited to:
  • Hardware
  • Networking concepts & hardware
  • Fieldbus technology knowledge
  • Industrial Drives
  • Knowledge of functional safety programming
  • Back ground in material handling / conveyor industry or similar
  • Ability to design and develop HMI & SCADA systems
  • Previous experience of working with motion control via inverters and servo drives
