Controls Engineering Apprentice

The Controls Engineering Apprentice is a key member of the TGW Northern Europe’s Controls Team and vital in the continued successful delivery of our projects. Apprentices will learn all aspects of controls engineering and form part of project teams. Throughout your apprenticeship you will produce electrical circuit diagrams, technical specifications, SCADA screens and prepare, emulate, commission and verify PLC code. Working in close conjunction with the Hardware, Systems and Commissioning Engineer, to successfully deliver our projects. You will also effectively communicate with Controls Services Manager(s) and Engineering Designers. You will promote a continuous improvement culture; focusing on your personal development, ensuring that you are working efficiently while following our group standards.


Year 1

Fulltime college studying a Level 3 Diploma in AME (Advanced Manufacturing Engineering – Product Design and Development) With block release on BTEC level 3 Diploma in Engineering


Years 2 – 4

Pre-site Phase

Assisting with preparation of cost estimates

Creating electrical device layouts

Preparing cable calculations

Production of Electrical Circuit Diagrams

Creating SCADA (.SAV) layouts and configuration

Emulation model creation

PLC Software and hardware configuration preparation

Undertaking emulation testing


Site Phase

Work on PLC area(s) and or products, ensuring that PLC hardware is set up and any electrical issues are identified

Undertake full level 1 PLC commissioning, to include but not limited to:

PLC panel powered and set up according to documentation

PLC network set up and all nodes are fault free

I/O checked according to I/O list and all issues rectified

Photoelectric and other type sensors set up.

Motor speed and direction set up.

Manual operation checked using SCADA (.SAV)

Identify and rectify any hardware & electrical faults

Documenting changes to electrical drawings

Actively work with the ComC Lead, ComC and ComC Junior Engineers and SIM/SIT in the testing system and verification of PLC functionality, nodal and system rates

Attend daily controls stand up meetings to gather progress, issues status and plan daily resources


Clearly communicate with the ComC, ComC Lead, Controls Services Manager(s) and wider commissioning team

Update all check sheets and progress trackers according to processes

Follow the software revision and backup process as required

Ensure all changes or modifications are fed back to the project team and design department

To comply with all current health & safety legislation and promote a positive health & safety culture

Be an ambassador for the delivery of TGW NE controls and actively promote company standards and best practice

Work with the Controls Services Manager(s) and wider team to develop and maintain best practices and guidance. Promoting both, continuous process improvements in efficiency

Actively manage self-development


Essentially you need to be enthusiastic about engineering. Do you perhaps enjoy tinkering with things and figuring out how they work? It may even be that you are a massive fan of Lego? whatever it may be, stick it in your CV as we really like to see your individuality and creativity. 

This apprenticeship will see you interacting with many different TGW employees from across Northern European business and may even see you traveling to various countries to visit sites, so please only apply if you enjoy traveling and interacting with lots of different characters.

The one thing that we have to ensure that you have is a minimum of a grade 4 in GCSE English, Maths and Science or an equivalent qualification.

In addition to completing your tailored qualification on the job, as well as receiving support from your mentor, you will be provided with academic study time in college that can include block release or day release.
