Paris is always a good idea

Paris is always a good idea

Ernest Hemingway said “There are only two places in the world where we can live happy: at home and in Paris“. Now after I have spent more than 10 months here, I agree with that! Actually, Paris feels already a bit like home. But let´s start from the beginning.

I remember the first time I came to Paris with a few colleagues to visit a customer. We arrived the day before our meeting, so we were able to spend a night in Paris. We were walking from one attraction to another until 2am (by the way it was raining and we got pretty wet) but it was just amazing, we didn´t want to go home. At this moment I knew: Paris, I will like you.

A few months later my expatriation started, it was the 1st of September 2017. I landed at the Charles de Gaulle Airport and Patrick Teissier was already waiting for me.

First we drove to the hotel and then we went to our temporary office, where we should spend the next 3 months because the new office has not been finished yet. We were working in a huge open office with our laptops and lots of cartons around us. At that time, we were travelling a lot meeting customers, I work as a Solutions Designer. It really felt like a small start-up but this was exactly the driver for this decision, despite it was not an easy one. Actually, it was the most difficult one of all opportunities I had because I was not speaking French at all. Lots of people were telling me “are you crazy why did you choose France?”, but this was exactly what I wanted, a challenge to get the best out of myself.

After one month living in a hotel I found an amazing apartment right in the center of Paris, only a 5 minute walk away from Notre-Dame. Bars, restaurants, all kinds of events and actually everything you can imagine were very close to my home. So these are perfect preconditions for a young man’s life in both private and professional concerns. This is really something great, the opportunity to live in the center of such a spectacular city is amazing. A big advantage is also that you can reach Paris pretty fast from everywhere. When I would like to spend some time with family or friends I can jump on a plane and in a few hours I am home or they are here.

I was also pretty lucky because before I went to Paris I met two Parisians during my holidays in Hvar (Croatia) and we became good friends. This made my start perfect because they introduced me to their friends and I got to know a lot of people in a really short time. I say lucky because it´s not very easy to meet new people in Paris as people here are always in a hurry. It´s not easy to become part of it.
Finally, the waiting had an end. One week before Christmas we were able to move to our new office in Créteil. It´s a suburb in the east of Paris about 40 minutes away from my home. A typical industrial estate, but we have one of the nicest offices in this area.

When we moved into the office we were 6 people and we became a great team extremely fast. The spirit and the teamwork were fantastic from the beginning. Everyone was supporting me in all private issues with French regulation topics, which are actually difficult sometimes. I want to use this opportunity to thank everyone for their support.

Looking back after 10 months, I can say it was definitely the right decision to come to Paris. It is an opportunity to see and show what you are made of, it is a big challenge but that´s how you grow as a person in all parts of your life.

I strongly believe that we will be able to celebrate lots of successes here in France in the next years because I see people in this team who are ready to sacrifice and give their best to build a great and successful unit in the heart of France.

Maybe you will also have the chance to join TGW France or any other Unit and I tell you, you don´t need to think twice. Forget all the reasons why you shouldn´t do it and believe in all the things why you should go for it.
