Control Systems and Hardware Engineer

The Systems & Hardware Engineer - Controls is responsible for taking the mechanical design of a system and engineering the electrical and hardware elements for the controls system solution, including creating Sensor Actuator Layouts (SALs) and the ePLAN schematics for the system.

They will produce a working design that will meet the required project performance factors and all required standards, (regional and company) and then develop the detailed hardware engineering schematics and related reports to cover; IO Listings, Cable overviews, Network overviews, BOMs, Field Cabinets, PLC Cabinets and other specialized interface cabinets.

Tasks

• Reviewing of mechanical layouts (x-refs) and populating the x-refs with the electrical and controls hardware components
• Producing detailed design documentation including; Sensor Actuator Layout drawings, cable routes, Bill of Materials and design calculations.
• Making sure that all system control components and architectures are within the correct design limitations for that type of system, i.e. Cable Capacity, Voltage Drop, Fault Currents, Profibus runs, Profinet runs and working distances, etc.
• Creation of a full set of schematic circuit diagrams and all associated reports using ePLAN
• Applying the company standard installation components wherever possible and where not possible provide a cost effective alternative solution, which maintains the aim of minimising costs and installation time.
• Define / Design / Implement any interfaces to third party controls
• Work with the software engineering and PrMC teams to ensure they have the necessary information to carry out their work.
• Support of the on-site team in technical matters relating to the design and electrical installation of the system.
• Participate in the project Design Risk Assessment process when needed.
• To design systems that conform to or exceed all applicable regulatory and company standards
• Update all drawings sets based on ‘red line’ drawings received from site
• Promote and steer company standards and ensure best practise is implemented in the design. 
• Good Housekeeping skills – including revision control, as-built documentation etc

Requirements

• In depth understanding of control system hardware and design principles, including; low voltage control gear, networks, fieldbus systems, industrial drives, bar code reading systems, etc.
• Good knowledge of CAD tools used in the generation of schematic drawings, sensor actuator layouts, etc. e.g. ePLAN, AUTOCAD
• Able to work in a team environment with a group of engineers to deliver a project.
• Good communication skills, able to effectively communicate with all levels of people encountered throughout the project lifecycle.
• Attention to detail / focus on quality of work
