Teamwork, challenging, rewarding

A fascinating interview with Resident Technical Specialist Cameron Pinkerton about his work on-site at URBN, United Kingdom.

Name / Area of expertise / TGW Location:
Cameron Pinkerton / Resident Technical Specialist / URBN, United Kingdom

My latest online order:
A new terminal screwdriver

At TGW since:
I started my apprenticeship with TGW in June 2012

My clothing style at work?
Safety shoes, TGW pants and polo shirt

My "job self" in three words:
Professional, approachable, appreciative

Stairs or elevator?
Stairs: a lot quicker!

My first weeks at TGW were spent at Ocado in Dordon during the installation of the system. It was my first experience inside a warehouse of that scale, or even with warehouse automation. I will always remember the scale of the installation, but what was most impressive to me was the way I was treated: with open arms, patience and of course some humor!

CAMERON, TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB AS RESIDENT TECHNICAL SPECIALIST.

In short, my job as Resident Technical Specialist is about providing additional support to the resident URBN team when any kind of fault requires in-depth investigation, along with the continued training of the team and making improvements to ensure efficiency and productivity. This not only benefits the team, but also the customer's throughput and equipment availability.

WHAT IN YOUR PROFESSION CAN SPARK YOUR ENTHUSIASM TO THE EXTENT THAT YOU TEMPORARILY FORGET ABOUT EATING OR DRINKING OR EVEN "MAKING MONEY"?

When a colleague is having a bad day and struggling with a task, or a customer cannot use the equipment due to a breakdown, I will be the person who is there and helping until the task is complete. It doesn't matter if that means not having a break or even not earning money: I would rather help my colleagues overcome obstacles.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT AT TGW SO FAR?

My greatest sense of achievement definitely comes from the friendships I have forged at TGW. No matter what time of the day, if there is anything I am unsure of, there is always a colleague who is willing to assist. Whether that be laughing with me while I'm lying under a very dirty conveyor, or providing me with technical details from the manual when my laptop has died. These friendships have definitely given me my greatest sense of achievement.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN YOUR COLLEAGUES?

The thing I value most about my colleagues is their empathy and approachability. No matter what is happening on-site (whether of a professional or personal nature), someone is always there to support you or laugh with you. They are the true definition of a team.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN FOCUSES OF YOUR JOB AT THE MOMENT?

At the moment, the main focus of my work is to recognize issues on-site and find solutions for them. This can range from foreseeing an issue and ordering the required tool, to adapting our SAV to make navigation easier and quicker for the engineers. I help my colleagues to correctly diagnose faults, teaching them new skills in the process.
