AGVs are defined by line-bound navigation. This may be physical lines (consisting of magnetic strips or QR codes) or virtual lines (through contour-based or camera-based navigation). Guided by a vision system to determine obstacles, the device will wait for it to be cleared before proceeding. AGVs' autonomy can now be expanded to allow them to leave their defined path in certain situations.
What sets AMRs apart is their fully autonomous navigation, using various sensor and camera technologies to achieve this. Barcodes on the floor are used to determine the direction to take. The devices' autonomy allows them to safely avoid people and objects based on a virtual map of their environment. AMRs are excellent for dynamic, responsive environments where they may have to react to unexpected situations.
